Why should I trim the wick and only burn for 3-5 hours per session?

Through normal use, cotton wicks will begin to “mushroom” or split if not trimmed or burned for more than 3-5 hours per session, and create burnt debris which fall in the wax. Also, large untrimmed wicks make hotter and larger flames. A larger flame melts the wax faster, which means your candle is burning faster and turning your money into soot and smoke.

Burning your candle for 3-5 hours per session ensures that the wax melts all the way to the edge of the vessel. The melted wax is what gives off the hot throw fragrance, when lit.

Burning candles for 3-5 hours at a time prevents tunneling and creates an even burn.

A ‘’Good Rule’’ is to burn your candle an hour for every inch of candle diameter.

Most candle flames will flicker as they burn further down into the jar due to less oxygen/air flow. To prevent that, trim the wick ⅛ of an inch, to create a smaller flame, that even flicker, does not overheat the vessel.

Why does candle flame flicker when there is no wind?

Wick

If the wick is too-long it can cause the candle flame to grow and flare and create carbon build-up on the top of the wick, we call ‘’mushroom”. That is why it is so important to trim the wick ¼ of an inch before every use to promote proper flame height, and ensure that the wax pool is free of debris.

Draft and Movement

Even if we do not notice a draft in our home, it does not mean there is any.

Any air movement that disturbs the flame’s teardrop shape, makes candle flame to flicker and a small amount of unburned carbon particles (soot) will escape from the flame.

Even if we can not feel it, there is a small air motion, created by drafty windows, fans/air conditioners, air vents, and furnaces used in the cold seasons.

Tip: Keep your candle away from drafty windows, open doors, drapes, vents or strong air currents.

Unventilated area

If the room or space is not well ventilated, it can cause the candle flame to flicker, because of too little air.

Tip: Always burn your candle on a table, non-flammable, heat-resistant surface, away from flammable products and in a well ventilated space.

Flame

Pay attention to your candle flame! If you notice the flame is high and flicker, extinguish your candle immediately, to prevent the vessel to heat-up and cracking.

Tip: After the candles cool, try to reposition the candle, trim the wick, check for drafts and air movement before relight it.

Wax

The soot release and parts of the wick and carbon build-up that have fallen into the wax pool can cause the flame to flicker.

Tip: Before relighting your candle, trim the wick, and clean if any debris occurs.

Storage

Depending on how you store the candle, the wax can collect dust, dirt and even moisture.

Tip: Always use the lid to cover, and if the candle comes with no lid, place it in a zip-look freezer bag once it cools. Then place the candle in a cool, dark and dry place.

Why does my candle have “wet spots” or look like it is “frosted”?

These are natural characteristics of pure soy wax, not containing any paraffin or additives.

Any of those characteristics will not affect the fragrance throw or burning properties of the candle.

During the fall and winter seasons some candles may develop wet spots or frosting appearance, due to the colder temperature during the shipping.

That is very common with candles made from pure soy wax.

This will not affect the candle burn, or fragrance throw, but is proof that we use pure soy wax.

Why is the surface of my candle uneven after each burning?

The uneven or bumpy tops after drying are common with soy wax. Sometimes it will dry smooth as glass. There is nothing to worry as our soy is an all-natural wax.

Why did my candle change the wax’s color over time or after first burning?

Some of the Lushica candles / tea lights / wax melts can develop a yellowish color, due to the vanilla content on our fragrance oils, which does not affect the performance of your candle.

The candle wax can change the color if exposed to sunlight or fluorescent lights.

Candles that turn yellow after burning or over time will still perform the same way.

Why is my candle not releasing a strong scent?

Some fragrances are stronger than others. Also there is a maximum amount of fragrance oils that we can add, to keep your candle burning cleanly or properly.

Tip: To optimize the hot throw scent we recommend burning your candle in the desired room or space, between 30 minute to 2 hours with the doors and windows closed.

Please keep that in mind, one of our 8oz single wick candles will cover a medium room.

For a large space we will recommend at least 2 or 3 candles.

If you like to use more than one candle per room, make sure they are at least 3 inches apart when burning. If they are placed too closely can create their own draft and cause the candle to flare.

Why is my candle releasing soot?

Because of dust, carbon build-up on the top wick, debris on wax pool, not trimming the wick, air motion or drafts, burning more than 2 - 5 hours per session.

Tip: If soot form inside of the vessel, extinguish the candle, wait to cool, trim the wick to ⅛ of an inch, clean any debris or dust, then wipe the inside vessel with a clean damp cloth, let the glass dry completely, check for drafts and air motion, reposition the candle and relight it.
